This sheet goes with the Credit reports and scores session. It is general information, not advice about your own situation.

Get your report

  • Use the free, official route below, not a search result.
  • You shouldn’t need a card number to see your own report.
  • Bureaus can hold different information, so check each one.

Read it line by line

  • Check your name, date of birth and addresses.
  • Look for accounts you don’t recognize, wrong balances and late payments that weren’t late.
  • Look for old debts that should have dropped off, and debts listed twice.

Dispute errors in writing

  • Contact the credit bureau and the company that reported the error.
  • Say what is wrong and why; send copies, never originals.
  • Keep a copy of everything, with dates, and follow up.

Scores and rebuilding

  • A score is calculated from your report; different bureaus give different numbers.
  • Paying on time and keeping balances well below limits generally help.
  • Paying someone can’t get accurate information removed; you can dispute errors yourself, free.

In Argentina

  • The Central de Deudores. The Banco Central (BCRA) lets anyone check the Central de Deudores del Sistema Financiero (register of borrowers) online by CUIT, CUIL or CDI (tax ID numbers). It shows who reported each loan, the amount, the rating (situación 1 to 5) and days late, for the last 24 months.
  • Being listed is not a ban. Loans in good standing (situación 1, normal) are listed too. The BCRA does not stop anyone from borrowing: a lender may look at the register, but the decision is the lender’s.
  • Fixing an error. Complain first to whoever reported the data and keep the complaint number. If it is not fixed, the BCRA has a free online process. Private credit information companies are separate: complaints about their data go to them.
  • Your right to see your data. Under Ley 25.326 (personal data protection law) you can ask any company or public body for the data it holds on you, free of charge every six months; it has 10 calendar days to answer. A request to correct or delete data must be acted on within 5 business days.
  • Old debts. A credit information company still reporting a debt you paid two years ago can be asked to delete it; an unpaid debt, five years after the last significant information. If a request is ignored, you can complain to the AAIP (data protection authority).
