Safeguarding
Keeping people safe in our work.
How we protect young people and adults at risk in Pathways and any other work with them, and how to raise a concern.
In short
- Volunteers have the background checks local law allows before working with young people or adults at risk.
- Never alone and unobserved with anyone under 18, in person or online.
- In immediate danger, call your local emergency number or the police first.
- Any other concern: email hello@moraph.org marked URGENT.
Who this covers
This statement covers Pathways and any Moraph for Good work that involves young people under 18 or adults at risk of harm, in person or online. It applies to every Moraph employee and volunteer taking part, and we ask partner organizations to share theirs with us so the two work together.
Where a partner’s safeguarding rules are stricter than ours, we follow theirs.
Who takes part
- Volunteers working with young people or adults at risk have the background checks that local law allows for that role, before they start.
- They are briefed on this statement and on the partner’s own rules, and know who the partner’s safeguarding lead is.
- Anyone can be asked to step back from an activity while a concern is looked into.
In person
- No Moraph volunteer is ever alone and unobserved with anyone under 18. Sessions and mentoring happen in open or observed spaces, with another adult present or in sight.
- Volunteers do not give lifts, meet outside planned sessions, or exchange personal contact details with learners under 18.
- Photographs and recordings are made only with consent, and for anyone under 18, the consent of a parent or guardian as well.
Online sessions
- Online sessions run on accounts managed by Moraph or the partner, not personal accounts, with at least two adults from Moraph or the partner present when learners under 18 attend.
- No private one-to-one messaging or calls with learners under 18. Messages go through channels the partner can see.
- Volunteers do not connect with learners under 18 on personal social media.
- Sessions are not recorded without consent, given in advance, from the participants and, for anyone under 18, a parent or guardian.
How to report a concern
If someone is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number or the police now. Do not wait to contact us.
For any other concern about the safety or wellbeing of a young person or adult at risk in our work, or about how someone from Moraph has behaved:
- Email hello@moraph.org with URGENT: safeguarding concern in the subject line.
- If the concern arose during a partner’s program, tell the partner’s safeguarding lead as well.
- You do not need proof, and you do not need to be sure. Describe what you saw or were told, when, and who was involved, in your own words.
Learners can raise a concern themselves in the same way, or ask any adult they trust to do it for them.
What Moraph does with a concern
- A senior member of the Moraph for Good team takes responsibility for it as soon as it is received, and acknowledges it.
- Where a person may be at risk, the Moraph person concerned stops taking part in the activity while the concern is dealt with.
- We tell the partner organization and, where the law requires or the risk calls for it, the police or the relevant local authority. We do not investigate possible crimes ourselves.
- We keep a confidential record that only the people handling the concern can see, and share information only with those who need it to keep someone safe.
- We tell the person who raised the concern what we have done, as far as we can without putting anyone at risk.
Nobody who raises a concern in good faith will face any consequences for doing so.
