In Argentina
- No obra social or prepaga. The Ministerio de Salud’s Programa Sumar+ gives health coverage to everyone who has no obra social (social health insurance) or prepaga (private plan), through provincial public hospitals and health centers. Its free line is 0800 222 7100, and it has provincial offices.
- Primary care centers. Remediar, a Ministerio de Salud program, aims to give free essential medicines to people treated in the public system. You see a doctor at a Centro de Atención Primaria de la Salud (CAPS, primary care center) and collect a prescribed medicine there if it is in the Remediar kit and available.
- Remediar is changing. In October 2026 the Ministerio de Salud approved a new Remediar list focused on preventing and treating vascular disease and its risk factors, such as high blood pressure, with a transition kit until the end of 2026. Each province remains responsible for providing treatments for other conditions.
- Your right to be seen. Under the patient rights law (Ley 26.529), everyone has the right to be seen by a doctor. A doctor or hospital can stop attending you only once another doctor or competent staff has taken over your care.
- Free advice line. The Ministerio de Salud’s 0800 Salud Responde line, 0800-222-1002, is free from anywhere in the country and answers questions on vaccines, high-cost medicines, Remediar, Sumar+ and other health topics. For mental health emergencies, call 0800-999-0091.
- PAMI members. Members of PAMI (INSSJP, the national institute for retirees and pensioners) can choose a médico de cabecera (family doctor), who can’t charge them any fee.
