Speaker notes

Welcome everyone. Introduce yourself and say this is a one-hour session on where to find care when cost is a worry.

Before we start

How today works

  • General information, not medical advice
  • We won’t recommend any clinic or provider
  • Nobody will be asked about their own health, money or status
  • Take-home handout with the official places where you live

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care2 / 14

Speaker notes

Set the tone. If someone starts sharing personal details, thank them and steer back to the general picture.

Where to look

Places low-cost care comes from

  • Community health centers, publicly funded in some countries
  • Free and charitable clinics
  • Clinics with sliding-scale or reduced fees
  • Pharmacists and free health advice lines
  • Public programs for people on low incomes

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care3 / 14

Speaker notes

Ask the room which of these they have heard of. Not every country has all of them; the handout says which exist here.

Sliding scale

How a sliding-scale fee works

  • The fee depends on income and household size
  • Say the full fee is 100
  • A household on a lower income might pay 20 instead
  • You usually need to show proof of income

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care4 / 14

Speaker notes

The numbers are made up and round on purpose. The point is that the price can change, so always ask.

Worth remembering

No cover, or not enough cover, doesn’t mean nowhere to go.

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care5 / 14

Speaker notes

Pause here. Many people delay care because they assume they can’t afford it, without asking.

Where you live

Here, in this country

  • The official finder or service directory
  • Who the public services see
  • The free health advice line
  • Help with costs for people on low incomes

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care6 / 14

Speaker notes

Now use the country block on the handout. Read the points aloud and keep to what it says.

Show me

Using the official finder

  • Search by postcode, ZIP code or town
  • Check opening hours and whether you need an appointment
  • Note the phone number
  • Call before you go

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care7 / 14

Speaker notes

If you have a connection, show the official finder from the handout live, searching near the venue. Don’t recommend one result over another.

Before you go

Questions to ask on the phone

  • Are you seeing new patients?
  • What does a visit cost, and is there a reduced fee?
  • Who can you see, and do I need anything to be seen?
  • What should I bring?
  • Can I have an interpreter?

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care8 / 14

Speaker notes

Encourage people to write the answers down with the date and the name of the person they spoke to.

What to bring

Have these ready

  • Any ID or health card you have
  • Proof of income, if they use a sliding scale
  • A list of medicines you take
  • Your questions, written down

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care9 / 14

Speaker notes

Ask the clinic what it needs. Some services ask for nothing at all.

Activity

The practice call

  1. Work in pairs: a caller and a front desk
  2. Use the script and the made-up clinic cards on the worksheet
  3. The caller notes the answers in the table
  4. Swap roles after about seven minutes

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care10 / 14

Speaker notes

Eighteen minutes in all. Walk around and help. People should use made-up details.

After the activity

Asking about cost is normal. Front desks expect it.

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care11 / 14

Speaker notes

Use this slide during the debrief. Ask what made the question easier the second time.

When it can’t wait

Advice, urgent care, emergency

  • Not sure where to go: call the free advice line
  • Urgent but not life-threatening: urgent care or walk-in services
  • Might be an emergency: call the emergency number or go to an emergency department
  • Get help first, sort out the cost afterwards

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care12 / 14

Speaker notes

Point to the numbers on the flip chart. Never tell anyone whether their own situation is an emergency.

Where to check

Official help

  • The official finder on your handout
  • The free health advice line
  • The public program pages on your handout
  • Your local library or community center, for help getting online

Moraph for Good · Reach · Finding low-cost care13 / 14

Speaker notes

Remind people that the handout has the official addresses, so they don’t need to search and risk landing on an advert.

Thank you

Questions?

  • Your handout has the official finder and advice line where you live
  • Next session: reading a medical bill
  • Make one call this week, using the script

Take questions. For anything about someone’s own care, point to the advice line or the official sources on the handout.
