Portals and video appointments
A Reach session from Moraph for Good

Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments1 / 16
Speaker notes
Welcome everyone. Say this session is about using online health services safely, and that nobody will log in to anything.
Before we start
How today works
- We practise on paper, not real accounts
- Nobody shares passwords or health details
- General information, not medical advice
- Take-home handout for where you live
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments2 / 16
Speaker notes
Repeat the no-login rule. It protects people and makes the room relaxed.
What it is
A patient portal is a secure website or app from your provider
- Run by a clinic, hospital, health plan or health service
- You sign in with your own account
- What you can do depends on the provider
- Many also work in a web browser on a computer
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments3 / 16
Speaker notes
Keep it generic. Don’t name any portal product. Government services in the country block are fine to mention later.
What people use it for
Common things you can do
- Book or check appointments
- Send a message to the clinic
- See some test results and letters
- Ask for a repeat prescription
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments4 / 16
Speaker notes
Ask who has used one and what for. Don’t ask why.
Setting up
Five steps to a safe setup
- Get the sign-up link from the provider, not from a search or message
- Expect to prove who you are
- Choose a strong password you use nowhere else
- Turn on two-step sign-in if offered
- Write down where you keep the details, not the password itself
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments5 / 16
Speaker notes
Explain two-step sign-in simply: a code sent to your phone, or a face or fingerprint check, as well as the password.
Help from family
Let people help without sharing your login
- Ask about family or carer access
- Helpers get their own sign-in
- You can usually change or remove access
- Sign out fully on shared computers
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments6 / 16
Speaker notes
Many services offer proxy, carer or nominated representative access. The country block has examples.
Activity
Try it: the paper portal
- In pairs, take a paper portal page
- Find: send a message, check an appointment, see a result, order a repeat prescription, sign out
- Circle anything you would want help with
- Six minutes
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments7 / 16
Speaker notes
Walk around. If people find sign out hard to spot, say that’s common and worth practising.
Results
A result may arrive before the explanation
- Some results show up before a clinician has reviewed them with you
- Normal ranges don’t tell the whole story
- If a result worries you, call the clinic
- Avoid searching online for what it means
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments8 / 16
Speaker notes
Do not interpret any result, even a made-up one. This slide is about what to do, not what results mean.
Messages
Portal messages are not for emergencies
- Replies may not come quickly
- For urgent problems, call the clinic or a health advice line
- If it might be an emergency, call your emergency number
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments9 / 16
Speaker notes
Remind people of their local emergency number.
Scams
Real health services don’t rush you, threaten you or ask for payment by gift card.
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments10 / 16
Speaker notes
Introduce the second half of the activity.
Activity
Try it: safe or suspicious?
- 1. A text: your health card will be cancelled today unless you confirm your number at this link
- 2. A letter with your clinic’s usual address, asking you to book a routine check by calling the number on the clinic’s website
- 3. A call offering a free test kit if you give your health number and bank details
- For each: safe or suspicious, and why?
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments11 / 16
Speaker notes
Answers: 1 is suspicious (urgency, link, request for details). 2 looks routine, and checking the number on the official website is the right move. 3 is suspicious (free offer in return for health and bank details). Stress the habit: check independently, whatever the message looks like.
Video appointments
Before the day
- Test the link, camera, microphone and sound
- Charge the device and check your internet or data
- Find a quiet, private place with light in front of you
- Write down your questions and the medicines you take
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments12 / 16
Speaker notes
If you prepared a test call on your own device, show it now. Never use a real health account.
Ask for what you need
You can ask for
- An interpreter or captions
- A phone call instead of video
- A family member or carer to join
- An in-person appointment if video won’t work for you
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments13 / 16
Speaker notes
Many services offer these when asked. Encourage people to ask when booking, not at the last minute.
Scam rules
Three habits that stop most scams
- Don’t click links in unexpected messages; go to the portal or website directly
- Never share passwords, codes or bank details in reply to a call or message
- Hang up and call back on a number you already have
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments14 / 16
Speaker notes
Mention that sign-in codes sent to your phone are for you only; no real service asks you to read one out.
Where you live
Your handout has the local details
- Official accounts and portals run by government, where they exist
- How family or carers can get access
- Where to report a scam
Moraph for Good · Reach · Portals and video appointments15 / 16
Speaker notes
Walk through the country block briefly.
Thank you
Questions?
- Ask your clinic how to join its portal
- Set it up when you are well and have time
- When in doubt, call back on a number you already have
