Worksheet · moraph.org/commons/sessions/reach/reading-a-medical-bill
Use these pages during the session and keep them. Nobody has to share their answers, and the bill below is made up.
1 The made-up bill
Situation: one clinic visit on 3 May, with a blood test. Nothing else happened. The bill says: Line 1, 3 May, office visit, 120. Line 2, 3 May, blood test, 40. Line 3, 3 May, blood test, 40. Line 4, 4 May, X-ray, 90. Line 5, 3 May, dressing supplies, 15. Paid so far: 0. Amount due: 305. Write each line you would question, what looks wrong, and what you would ask.
| Line | What looks wrong | What I would ask |
|---|---|---|
2 The corrected total
If the billing office agreed with you, what should the amount due be? Show your working.
3 My call notes
Use this table for a real call later, if you want to. You don’t have to fill it in now.
| Date and time | Who I spoke to | What they said | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
4 Before I pay a bill
Tick the steps you want to remember.
- Ask for an itemized bill
- Compare it with any estimate or insurer statement
- Check the dates and my details
- Question any line I don’t recognize
- Ask about financial help, discounts or a payment plan
- Check the official rules on my handout
