Take the field guide into the room.
For Moraph people presenting at community events: a slide deck of the security field guide with speaker notes, and a 60-minute workshop plan. Free for anyone else to use too.
The workshop
Sixty minutes, two exercises.
For a room of people from small nonprofits, clinics, community lenders or local government. Nobody leaves with only slides: everyone leaves with three fixes and the start of a plan.
| Starts | Length | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | 5 min | Welcome and why this mattersSlides 1 and 2. Who you are, what Moraph for Good is, and that this is general information, not a sales pitch. |
| 0:05 | 20 min | The measuresSlides 3 to 14. Most of the time on the first four (multi-factor authentication, administrator accounts, backups, inventory) and on payments. |
| 0:25 | 15 min | Exercise: score yourselvesIn pairs, go through the self-assessment questions (printed, or at moraph.org/commons/self-assessment on a phone). Each person leaves with their top three fixes. |
| 0:40 | 10 min | The first hour, and a planSlides 15 and 16, then start a one-page plan: who decides, who to call, where the backups are. The incident plan builder finishes it later. |
| 0:50 | 7 min | QuestionsGeneral principles only. For questions about one organization’s own systems, suggest Shield. |
| 0:57 | 3 min | CloseSlides 17 to 19: the free tools, how to apply, and Commons by email. |
Thirty minutes instead? Give the talk without the exercises: slides 1 to 7, then 10, 15 and 17 to 19, and hand out the self-assessment to take away.
Before the session
Prepare
- Read the field guide end to end and check its “last reviewed” date. If it is old, ask the Moraph for Good team whether anything has changed.
- Open the slides on the venue’s screen beforehand, and keep a PDF on a memory stick in case the connection fails.
- Print the first-hour checklist from the field guide and the payment fraud poster for the room; bring the self-assessment on paper for people without a phone.
- Ask the host who is coming: sectors, roughly how large their organizations are, and whether they have IT support. Choose your emphasis to match.
- Ask about access needs early: step-free access, a microphone, large-print handouts, captions if the session is streamed.
- Agree the time with your manager as Moraph for Good time, and check the conflict of interest policy. If anyone under 18 will attend, follow the safeguarding statement.
In the room
Ground rules for presenters
- It is not a sales pitch. Don’t promote Moraph’s paid products, and don’t collect names or contact details. Point people to moraph.org/subscribe and moraph.org/apply instead.
- Don’t diagnose anyone’s own systems in public, or invite people to describe weaknesses or incidents in front of others.
- Don’t promise support. The Moraph for Good team decides applications against the published criteria.
- Use no figures you cannot source. Every claim in the guide has a primary source; quote those, not memory.
- Say that the guide is general information, not advice about anyone’s own setup.
Adapting it
Same guide, different rooms.
Keep the core: the measures and the first hour. Then add what the audience holds.
Community lenders and credit unions
Spend longer on payments, and point to the payment fraud toolkit and Before you sign.
Clinics and health organizations
Add privacy duties by country, and stress backups and leavers.
Local government and libraries
Add the records requests playbook, and the first hour for when the town hall is down.
Any audience
Mention accessibility basics and the technology programs directory.
Printing the slides
One slide per page.
Open the slides and choose “Print or save as PDF” (or your browser’s Print). Each slide prints on its own landscape page. Speaker notes print under each slide only if you have switched them on.
After the session, tell the Moraph for Good team at hello@moraph.org which questions came up. That is how Commons decides what to write next.
Commons by email
New guides, when they’re ready.
An email when we publish a new Commons guide or tool, and occasional news from Moraph for Good. Nothing else, and only when there is something worth sending.
