Ask on the phone
- Are you seeing new patients?
- What does a visit cost, and is there a reduced fee?
- What should I bring?
- Can I have an interpreter?
Bring with you
- Any ID or health card you have.
- Proof of income, if they use a sliding scale.
- A list of the medicines you take.
If it can’t wait
- If it might be an emergency, call the emergency number first.
- If you’re not sure where to go, call the free advice line below.
In Mexico
- Free at public units. If you have no social security, public health services, medicines and related supplies are free under the Ley General de Salud (General Health Law): you shouldn’t be charged a cuota de recuperación (user fee) or any other cost for them.
- Finding an IMSS-Bienestar clinic. In the 23 states that have joined IMSS-Bienestar, its website finds a clinic by state, municipality or postal code. You can be seen without registering; registering takes 10 to 15 minutes with your CURP (population registry code), a personal email address and a photo. Its phone line is 800 298 11 50.
- Choosing your doctor. The law lets you choose your doctor from those at the primary care unit for your address, depending on their hours and availability and each institution’s rules. In social security institutions, the insured person chooses for themselves and their beneficiaries.
- If you have IMSS. Insured people and pensioners can register online with their IMSS family clinic (Unidad de Medicina Familiar) using their CURP, postal code and email, and book appointments online or on 800 681 2525.
- If care is delayed or refused. The Comisión Nacional de Arbitraje Médico (CONAMED, the national medical arbitration commission) offers a free gestión inmediata (immediate assistance) when you asked for care, didn’t get it and your health is at risk: 55 5420-7000 or 800 711 0658.
