Online health services can save a trip, as long as they are set up safely and before you need them. This sheet sums up the session, with details for where you live in the box below.

Setting up a portal

  • Get the sign-up link from your provider, not from a search or a message.
  • Use a strong password you use nowhere else and turn on two-step sign-in.
  • Ask about family or carer access instead of sharing your login.
  • Sign out fully on shared or public computers.

Using it

  • Results can appear before a clinician has discussed them; call the clinic if one worries you.
  • Portal messages are not for emergencies.
  • If you can’t find something, ask the clinic’s front desk or help line.

Video appointments

  • Test the link, camera and sound before the day.
  • Find a private place and charge your device.
  • Have your questions and medicines list ready.
  • Ask for an interpreter, captions or a phone call if you need one.

Avoiding scams

  • Be wary of urgency, threats, free offers and payment by gift card.
  • Never share passwords, sign-in codes or bank details.
  • Hang up and call back on a number you already have.

In Mexico

  • IMSS Digital. The IMSS Digital website and app let you get your Número de Seguridad Social (NSS, social security number), check that your coverage is current and book a family doctor appointment. To book you need your CURP (population registry code), NSS and a personal email address. Appointments can also be made on 800 681 2525.
  • Proving who you are. To see your Cédula Digital de Salud (health summary) in the IMSS Digital app, you confirm your identity with a code sent by text message, your credencial para votar (voter ID card) and a selfie. Help: 800 953 0112, Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 20:00.
  • ISSSTE appointments online. ISSSTE’s Sistema de Cita Médica takes primary care bookings online at any hour, if your registration is current and you are assigned to a clinic. Have your RFC (tax ID) or CURP ready.
  • IMSS-Bienestar registration. People without social security in the 23 states that have joined IMSS-Bienestar can register for its credential in 10 to 15 minutes with their CURP, a personal email address, their locality and a photo.
  • Reporting cyber fraud. If you are a victim of an online crime, the Guardia Nacional’s 088 line gives guidance on reporting it.
